iPhone/iPod apps are all written in Objective-C. Objective-C is a subset of the C programming language, thus it looks a lot like C, but some of the extensions look a LOT different than C or C++.
EDIT: and yes you have to have a Mac running Snow Leopard to be able to use the complete functionality of the Apple SDK.
