I attacked a city near me, and my war results said that I won, but did not take the city. What happened?

If you're attacking people, you cannot take their main city, only their sub-cities. You can tell the difference between the two because main cities have an orange flag on it's square. In order to take a city, you'll need to lower its loyalty to 0, and you also need space for another city. Here's a table of how many branch/sub cities you can have at each lvl:
Lvl 1 - 0
Lvl 2 - 0
Lvl 3 - 0
Lvl 4 - 1
Lvl 5 - 1
Lvl 6 - 1
Lvl 7 - 2
Lvl 8 - 2
Lvl 9 - 2
Lvl 10 - 3
Lvl 11 - 3
Lvl 12 - 3
Lvl 13 - 4
Lvl 14 - 4
Lvl 15 - 4
Lvl 16 - 5
Lvl 17 - 5
Lvl 18 - 5
Lvl 19 - 6
Lvl 20 - 6
Please note those numbers are in addition to your main city, so you have your main city plus the number shown.
Attacking a sub city once and winning will lower it's loyalty by 10 so it will need to be attacked ten times within a small time frame to capture it, because they regain 10 loyalty every hour.
Also, you can only attack a player 5 times daily, so you'll need a friend to help you lower the loyalty to 0. OR, at 00:00:00 GMT, the haypi time resets, meaning it's a new day and you can attack another 5 times. So if you attack it 5 times quickly before and after 00:00:00 GMT, you will be able to take the city by yourself.
Lvl 1 - 0
Lvl 2 - 0
Lvl 3 - 0
Lvl 4 - 1
Lvl 5 - 1
Lvl 6 - 1
Lvl 7 - 2
Lvl 8 - 2
Lvl 9 - 2
Lvl 10 - 3
Lvl 11 - 3
Lvl 12 - 3
Lvl 13 - 4

Re: Why did I not get the city?
If the war was fought at an oasis/fort, it is easier to "take the city" (take the fort/oasis/city is what it really means)
Basically, if you win the battle at an oasis you get the oasis, end of story, divide your level by 2 and round up for how many oasis you can have at that level. You will only take the city if you can have another oasis
For forts, loyalty drops 40 per attack, usually if you attack in quick succesion it only takes 3 attacks to take a fort. The amount of forts you can have at your level is the same as how many branches you can have at your level

Doesnt it only start regenerating 1 hour after the last attack?

Yes, but the person who owns the city can also enhance loyalty, and then you are back to fighting a 100 loyalty city

Out of interest, where does it allow you to do that? I've never seen an 'enhance loyalty button' anywhere, even on a sub with less than 100 loyalty.......

In your main building ice that's where you enhance city loyalty
how do you let people know if your hot cakes are selling well?

It's in a blood red color I believe, you should notice it when you are in the main building
