Epic Linux Thread

Rules Of ELT:

1: Do not talk about ELT.
2: Really. DON'T.

4: Don't bash Linux. It's better than what you have.
5: If you broke rule 5, you are jealous/jelly. No exceptions.
6: No trolls. Go and find a bridge.

    Re: What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system. Like Windows. Actually, disregard that entirely. It's like windows in the sense that it is an OS, but compared to Windows, it kicks some serious... You get the idea.

It is free and open source. That means it will never die. Since the source code is free to everyone, people can keep on making new versions of it, called distros.

Why is it so much better? Lemme give you rundown.

    1: Go to whylinuxisbetter.net.

2: 99% of malware is non-existent on Linux platforms. And that 1% is fixed by AppArmor, a kernel security module or free Linux antivirus programs.

3: It is much faster. Apps load in approx 3-4 seconds. It boots in about 10 seconds. (U jelly, 10min Windows Boots?)

4: It stays fast. Don't ask me how. After 5 years your PC is as fast as the day you got it. Actually, as fast as the day you put Linux on it. The first day on Windows is the stuff of nightmares.

5: Kiss driver worries goodbye. And hardware problems. Always check first, though.

    6: It's free. Period.

7: There are sooooo many distros out there, if you send me a forum PM, I can help you find the right distro to suit your needs. Whether you want compatibility (Although you can compatibility anyway, using Wine or Parallels to run windows apps on Linux), Speed, Gaming, anything. Give me a good idea of what you need.

8: I could carry on forever, but read no.1, that link explains everything in simple graphical form, plus click the images for more details.

    Enjoy. :)

    Re: Epic Linux Thread

If you want to speed up the choosing process, here's an overview of some popular distros:

    Ubuntu:

Along with Mac and Windows, Ubuntu leads the OS Market. Fast, sleek and very easy to use.

    Xubuntu:

Ubuntu for low-spec machines. But don't let that put you off, run this on a high end PC and it'll go like a fast thing strapped to an aerodynamic fast thing.

    OpenSUSE:

OpenSUSE rivals Ubuntu. It uses a different desktop engine, KDE4 and 3, along with a bleep-ton of features. ;)

    Mythbuntu:

TV fanatic? Mythbuntu is orientated towards MythTV and media playing.

I'll update this list as I remember more distros. Enjoy.

Make sure to PM me for more help with choosing, downloading and installing. :)

Note, if you want to know, I use Ubuntu, Xubuntu and OpenSUSE. I recommend those to a Linux rookie. :)

Royal, do not, under any circumstances wreck the C:\ drive. The best to do if you are bored of vista, is to switch to linux.

I will help you do this tomorrow. It will replace vista with a better OS.

      I'll PM you tomorrow.
