what should i do to my banner to improve it?

Alliance name across the middle in a dark blue

Get rid of the Click Here words

It needs different depths I think. And I've never been a fan of square banners.
I would make it rectangle and put your main art to one side with some effects.

Maybe slowly fading repeats of the main image branching off to the left behind it with the main on the right hand side.
Not sure if that makes sense but I can picture it in my head :p

what other methods/software could we use thats free?

Uhhh...found a couple of other sites where you can make it without the branding, and custom sizes. But not very good font selection and you can't do much...ehhh maybe I'll make some after I finish Loz's

A slight greeny silver outline around the edge of the symbol would be nice, and also a bit of a 3D effect would be awesome
