I like the original idea, but have maybe a slight variation which would hopefully be easier for the devs as well. What if instead of just overflowing your current warehouse, you had the ability to create silos? First you would have to build these silos (which could be limited to 5 lets say), then once built, you could transfer resources from your warehouse to the silos. Now lets say a silo could hold 100k of a resource. You can decide which type of resource you want to stock up on (wood, stone, iron, or crop) since you could only store one type of resource in a silo at a time.
It would have to be decided though whether crops stored in silos would automatically transfer to your warehouse if your troops were about to starve or if you had to physically log in to transfer crops from the silo to the warehouse. If it was automatic, it could make starving someone a pretty difficult venture.
