Cut off. Just because you didn't want to follow the path your parents shoved you into. They wanted you to go to university in the east, become a gentleman, an aristocrat, marry late and retire early.
How could they understand? You've seen so little of the world. And what better way to see the world than to go to sea? You take every scrap of money you have, sell every belonging, and buy a ship nicknamed "Neptune's Droppings". Apparently, the dockworkers used the old scow as the port's garbage dump. You spend days going through the trash, until you come up with some strange blueprints. The sketches look like something you've only heard of in passing. And it includes a handwritten note in the margin--nautical coordinates.
Taking your sole vessel, the coordinates reveal what you thought was only a pipe dream -- a fully-constructed submersible. With this, you could raid the ocean floor of its priceless treasure. Do you even have the intelligence, the cunning, the diligence to do so?
